Marine biologist turned RAS engineer, Dr Andrew Whiston is CTO of Eden Valley Prawns in St Andrews, the UK’s only commercial King Prawn farm. In 2018, he designed Scotland’s first renewably powered land-based prawn system and has since focused on making warm-water aquaculture work in cold, energy-constrained environments using low-energy, clear-water RAS.
His work spans system efficiency, welfare, and practical engineering, alongside development of AI-driven monitoring, alternative feeds, and contributing to the development of a UK hatchery to underpin a domestic king prawn industry. At Aquaculture 2026, he will outline how King Prawns can be produced commercially in Scotland and what that means for the future footprint of aquaculture.
