Salmon farmers and vessel operators can now move more fish faster and gentler with the patent-pending SmoothMove

The SmoothMove is the world’s first purpose-built fish loading device. Every detail, from water flow to design, helps guide fish naturally into the system. The result: faster loading, more consistent transfer rates, lower crowding and happy fish.

Traditional loading methods rely on crowding to move fish. SmoothMove takes a different approach. It turns fish loading into a controlled, fish-forward process – delivering better outcomes for the fish, for operations and the bottom line.

Calm fish load more efficiently and experience less stress. Fish that experience less stress during loading operations result in improved quality at harvest. With the SmoothMove, operators have direct control. Built-in underwater cameras provide real-time visibility; they can monitor fish behavior throughout the process, maintain consistent loading speeds and identify and resolve issues as they arise.

Since June 2024 and the first operational sea trials, 5.16 million fish have been harvested with the SmoothMove in Canada, Scotland and Norway. The SmoothMove 400, which is now in permanent operation on a Norwegian harvest vessel, is producing consistent results with no operational downtime since 28 January 2026. The farmers and operators have achieved repeatable, reliable results demonstrating clear advantages of using the SmoothMove.

Fish loaded with the SmoothMove were measured to have less stress. A significant data set was collected and analyzed showing its impact on fish health. Blood samples showed a measurable reduction in key stress indicators such as lactate when loading with the SmoothMove. Even after one and a half hours into the transfer, fish that were sampled had lactate levels measuring low enough to be at resting rates. In addition, quality metrics from fish loaded with the SmoothMove were better and measurements of rigor showed significant improvement as well.
