At a remote fish farm on the Isle of Skye, a persistent and costly challenge had begun to escalate.

Despite efforts to tighten containment measures, jellyfish were continuing to infiltrate salmon pens, even slipping through reduced size mesh nets. The impact was significant – affecting fish health and leading to stock losses in an environment where control is often limited by natural conditions.

The solution, however, did not come only from changes to the nets themselves, but from the introduction of a carefully engineered air system.

Working alongside the operator, Airpac Rentals provided a tailored compressed air spread to support the deployment of a continuous bubble curtain system around the perimeter of multiple pens.

Powered by a combination of TwinAir units, air receivers and filtration equipment, the system works in conjunction with perforated hoses positioned by the client, releasing a steady flow of bubbles that disrupts and deters jellyfish from entering the enclosures.

Unlike physical barriers, the bubble curtain allows natural water movement to continue, maintaining the environmental conditions required for healthy stock while providing an effective line of defence.

Central to the system was the ability to deliver a consistent and controllable air supply across several pens simultaneously. Air flow was distributed via manifolds and adjusted on site to suit changing conditions, ensuring

even and reliable coverage throughout the loch-based installation.

Given the freshwater environment, maintaining air quality was also critical. An integrated filtration system ensured the air supply remained oil-free, meeting site requirements while protecting the surrounding ecosystem.

Operating continuously, the solution was designed to provide round-the-clock protection, reducing stock risk while allowing the farm to maintain normal operations.
